Subotica

Subotica is situated in the northern part of Serbia, near the Hungarian border and only 100 kilometers away from Novi Sad, 175 kilometers from Belgrade and almost the same from Budapest. The town was first mentioned in a document form 1391 as Zabotka, although it is known that the settlement had been established much earlier.

The fate of Subotica was mostly determined by its position on the frontier between the Austria-Hungarian Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire. Subotica developed rapidly: the first railway line (1864), modern industrial plant (1879), gasworks (1890), power plant (1896), library (1846), and theatre (1854) were built. The first school was opened in 1743 and the first faculty was established in 1920. The first doctor came to Subotica in 1770. The first sports club was established in 1864, and the first "moving pictures" were shown in 1902.

The Lake of Palic (several kilometers from Subotica) is a very interesanting and attractive place, especially for fishing and walking, known as picnic grounds and resort.

Subotica is a modern town, with about 100.000 inhabitants, well connected by good motorways and railway to all the countries of Europe and by the airports in Belgrade and Budapest with all the countries in the world. Subotica is also cultural, educational, scientific, economic and sport centre of Backa Region. Some industries are highly developed: chemical industry, civil engineering, metalworking industry, textile, leather and shoe industries, electronics, food processing industry, furniture industry, and so on.
